Brewing

Barley from Salisbury Plain was made into malt in small malt houses in the village. Much of the malt produced was sent to London by a broad wheeled wagon service. The local public houses brewed their own beer until the nineteenth century. The last brewery to brew was run by the Neate family at the back of 6 High Street, who sold their beer in “The Brewery Tap” – the business and pub closed in 1920.
